A Model for Effective Inclusive Education
A school first of its kind, Jowonio revolutionized inclusive education. Established in 1969 in Syracuse, NY, as an alternative school for kids whose families wanted a more open and individualized approach to education than public schools could offer, Jowonio accepted a wide range of kids from the beginning.
In 1975, Jowonio started receiving special support from the N.Y.S. Office of People with Developmental Disabilities and ever since has operated as a planful inclusive educational program.
Here, everyone belongs. Children of all abilities and needs learn together in the same classrooms. Our community’s gifts and challenges enhance our collective diversity. We face challenges creatively by caring for the whole child and offering individualized supports as needed to ensure access.
Our Name
Our founders selected the name “Jowonio”, understanding it was a word in the Onondaga Nation language that means “to set free.” Our founders believed education should be freeing minds and emotions to learn and grow, freeing individuals from stereotypes and prejudices.
