Special Class Inclusive Setting (SCIS)

Program overview

A special class inclusive setting (SCIS) is a classroom set up to support students of all abilities and needs. Teachers design a strong, developmentally appropriate preschool classroom and then build in additional supports to ensure that each child has full access to all parts of the classroom day.

How many students are in a SCIS?

Our standard classroom model includes 4-5 adults and 12-16 children. Approximately 40% of the students in each classroom qualify for this model through their local school district Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE).

Do SCISs have specially certified teachers?

The lead teacher in each classroom is a New York State-certified teacher in Special Education, often in Early Childhood Education as well. Speech-Language, Occupational, and Physical therapists are an active part of classroom teams as well, either pushing into the classroom or seeing children in the therapy room, as determined by the child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Regular collaborative team meetings help to ensure carryover of target skills and support strategies in the classroom and in therapy sessions.
